Dorking Man's Suicide After Littering Shame
Clive Danton - February 2015
A 49-year-old man from the sleepy Surrey backwater of Dorking has taken his own life by throwing himself in front of a speeding train at nearby Guildford Station.
Tony Philips, a bus driver who has lived in the town all his life, had reportedly been depressed since he was confronted by an elderly woman who had spotted him dropping a sweet wrapper in Dorking Hight Street on the 5th of October last year.
His mother, Mrs Kim Philips, 76, told us: "After the incident in the high street he became a changed man. He used to be so happy-go-lucky and the life and soul of any party, but after that woman had a go at him for dropping litter he became morose and short-tempered. He would stay locked in his bedroom for days. Sometimes I'd hear him sobbing when I walked past. I can't believe he's gone to be honest with you"
An 83-year-old local woman has been charged with harassment and making threats to kill. She was yesterday remanded in custody at Kingston Crown Court to await trial
